Historical Notes

#3300 was the first of 8 Baldwin 2-6-6-2 mallets to serve the
Denver & Rio Grande Western. It served for 26 years, from when it
was acquired in 1924 to when it was retired and scrapped in 1950.
These 2-6-6-2s were used primarily as helpers because, despite
their large, imposing appearance and 12 driving wheels, they
actually were quite weak and had poor track adhesion. For the purpose
of my own enjoyment, the engine file file on this locomotive has been
modified to allow it to pull small consists on its own. To learn more

Denver & Rio Grande 4-4-0

This locomotive was the first 4-4-0 type locomotive purchased by the new
Denver & Rio Grande railroad in 1876. It carried road #16 and was named
Pike in honor of Colorado explorer Zebulon Pike.
